Transition Committee Maps Out Path for Smooth Handover.

The Transition Committee, responsible for overseeing the transfer of power to the incoming administration, has outlined key steps to ensure a smooth and efficient handover.

At its second meeting on Friday, December 13, the committee approved the formation of six new sub-committees to address critical areas such as finance and the economy, energy and natural resources, legal and governance, infrastructure, interior and public safety, and the social sector.

In a statement from the Government Transition Team’s spokesperson, it was confirmed that each sub-committee will consist of three representatives from both the outgoing and incoming governments. Senior officials, including the Head of the Civil Service, the Head of the Local Government Service, and the Cabinet Secretary, will provide additional support as needed.

The committee has directed that handing over notes from various sectors be delivered promptly to the chairs of the sub-committees, allowing them to begin their work without delay.

These sub-committees are expected to submit their initial findings within one week to help facilitate the transition process. Outgoing sector ministers, agency heads, and technical staff will be called upon to contribute to discussions related to their respective sectors.

In response to concerns about ongoing recruitments and payments, the committee clarified that the outgoing administration’s term officially concludes at midnight on January 6, 2025. The statement also emphasized that all such activities are subject to statutory approvals and are deemed lawful unless proven otherwise.

“It was decided that any specific allegation of illegality regarding any particular payment or recruitment should be brought to the attention of the Transition Committee for a decision,” part of the statement read.

The committee further dismissed claims that all ongoing recruitments and payments had been halted or required direct referral to the Transition Team, stating that such reports did not reflect the decisions made during the meeting.

Reaffirming its commitment to a smooth transition, the government expressed its readiness to collaborate with the incoming administration to ensure an orderly handover of responsibilities on January 7, 2025.
