Ghana’s Agricultural Sector Struggles Amid Severe Drought: $500M Relief Package Unveiled.

Accra, Ghana – The 2024 drought has severely impacted Ghana’s agricultural sector, leading to an estimated GH¢3.5 billion in investment losses and GH¢10.4 billion in revenue losses for farmers.

This drought, considered the worst since 1982/83, has affected 62% of the country’s key grain-producing areas, including the Northern, North-East, Upper West, Upper East, Bono, Bono East, and Oti Regions. In response, the government has unveiled a $500 million relief package to assist affected farmers. However, there are concerns regarding the transparency and accountability of the fund’s distribution.

A National Conference on Climate Change has called on the government to develop a national policy on agroecology to promote sustainable agricultural practices, boost biodiversity, and strengthen resilience against climate change.
