Dr. Papa Kwesi Nduom, Founder and President of Group Nduom, claims that President Nana Akufo-Addo regrets his decision to work with former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta.
According to Dr. Nduom, President Akufo-Addo initially believed Ofori-Atta was the best choice for the role of Finance Minister. However, after appointing him to lead the country’s financial sector, the President reportedly feels that the choice has not yielded the expected results.
Dr. Nduom suggested that Ofori-Atta’s appointment stemmed partly from his role in raising funds for the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) election campaigns in 2016 and 2020. “He is the one the President trusted to raise money for his campaigns. When they won power, they entrusted him with running the economy,” he said, adding, “This proves the old saying that those who help you rise to power may not always be the ones to help you succeed.”
Dr. Nduom also asserted that President Akufo-Addo now regrets entrusting the nation’s economy to Ofori-Atta, an investment analyst who assumed the role of Finance Minister.
He further argued that Ghana’s financial sector has been “set on a path of destruction” and called for accountability from those in charge of the economy, even suggesting they be “criminalized” if necessary. Many opposition members have similarly criticized Ofori-Atta, accusing him of mismanaging the economy.
Recent studies indicate that Ghana’s economy has declined in recent years. The World Bank reports that the country has faced rising public debt from fiscal policies in response to external pressures, resulting in debt distress, reduced international reserves, and high inflation.
Dr. Nduom, who is not running in this year’s election, emphasized that his main concern is helping the Ghanaian population achieve self-sufficiency and job security. He shared these views during his weekly Facebook Live session on Wednesday, titled “Disappointed but not Discouraged.”
